Substitutes and complements

Substitutes
Substitutes satisfy the same want. For example, taxi or bus, butter or margarine, Coca-Cola or Pepsi, etc. Complements are in joint demand. For example, bread and butter, a car and gasoline, a razor and the blade, etc.

Complements
Complements are additional products needed to use an item. For example, CDs are needed to listen to music on a CD player. If the price of music players goes up, then its complements: the CDs, will not be as demanded because to buy the complements you need to have the main item and if it is really expensive, then people will just stream their music with Spotify and leave the CDs at the shop.
